Beautiful, spectacular Victoria, B.C.
All my life, I have wanted to visit Victoria, B.C. on the edge of Canada’s western coast. Despite travelling to Vancouver Island several times, I had never made it as far south as Victoria.
It’s hard to believe all this beauty of nature is just one hour by air away from my home.
A skiff of snow brought about a whole new vision.
Despite it being the middle of winter, grass and trees were green – waterways remained completely passable; no ice in sight. Each day when the U.S. ferry blew it’s horn and came into the harbour, I was thrilled!
A visitor to Fisherman’s Wharf – even though it was closed for the season.
One of the greatest pleasures while away from home, is to seek out local quilt shops. I stumbled upon Satin Moon http://www.satin-moon.com/ in my travels and absolutely fell in love with its location on Fort Street/Antique Row in downtown Victoria. Unfortunately for me, the shop was in transition and was not yet open in it’s new location (grand opening was Saturday, February 3, 2012). Satin Moon was not only moving from it’s established and successful home of 34 years, but was also undergoing a change in ownership. In a massive leap of faith and a desire to flee the cold Alberta winters, Linda Rafuse purchased the iconic quilt shop and moved 1300 miles from Edmonton to Victoria to run her new business venture. Sorta makes jumping off a cliff tame in comparison!
Linda choosing to surround herself with antique shops, small retail businesses and bakeries is a stroke of genius. The shops’ location will definitely be part of its charm.
Working with the shop’s loyal, long-term employees, Linda will be focusing on providing exceptional customer service to both her long-term customers and to those venturing into her shop for the first time. Beginner’s quilting, color classes and art quilting are only a sampling of the classes Satin Moon will be offering.
Definitely, do not take my word for it! When in Victoria, take some time, walk down Fort Street and explore all it has to offer – including a brand new and re-vamped Satin Moon.
All the best to you, Linda. I admire your courage, your faith in yourself and your business acumen.
